Microscopic Observation of Water Evaporation in Drying of Wood Segment
and its Relationship to AE Generation

It has been already reported that the generation of acoustic emission (AE) from drying wood is closely related to the movement of free water in the cellular structure. However the mechanism of the AE generation has been left unknown. In this report, we have microscopically observed the movement of free water in a straight grain wood segment of 50um in thickness in drying. At the same time, AEs from the segment were detected by attaching an AE sensor using a specially designed wave-guide.
