切削時に発生する音（切削音）によって工具の摩耗状態や損傷をインプロセスで識別するため、工具摩耗にともなう切削音の変化を明らかにし、識別関数やニューラルネットワークを用いて切削音の特徴（切削音パターン）から摩耗状態を識別する手法を明らかにした。
